PSIRA Grades A to E Explained: What Every Business Owner Must Know Before Hiring Security

Back to Blog

Why PSIRA Grades Matter to Business Owners

PSIRA grades define what training a security officer has completed and what roles they are legally qualified to perform. Understanding this system helps you verify compliance, spec your contract correctly, and ensure you're getting personnel matched to your actual needs.

Grade E — The Entry Level

New entrants with no prior security experience. Training covers foundational security duties, access control, report writing, communication protocols, and relevant law. Typical deployment: static guarding at lower-risk sites, parking control, reception security, basic access control under supervision.

Grade D — Junior Security Officer

Officers with Grade E certification and some operational experience. Expanded training in patrol procedures, search techniques, conflict management, fire safety, and first aid awareness. Typical deployment: general site security, retail security, patrol duties.

Grade C — Intermediate Security Officer

Experienced officers with Grade D certification. Advanced patrol techniques, CCTV monitoring, cash-handling security procedures, enhanced communication. Typical deployment: mall security, industrial site guarding, control room monitoring.

For most commercial and industrial deployments, Grade C and above provides the minimum appropriate qualification. Always request officer grade certificates before deployment begins.

Grade B — Senior Security Officer

Officers with Grade C qualification. Training covers site commander responsibilities, team coordination, emergency planning, and risk assessment. Typical deployment: site commanders, team leaders, high-value site security.

Grade A — Senior Manager / Executive Security

Highly experienced officers with Grade B qualification. Advanced management, security planning, threat intelligence, close protection principles. Typical deployment: security management, executive protection, National Key Point security.
